ZAPTRA's "Pulular" E.P. project

For ZAPTRA's new release, "Pulular", we wanted to create something mysterious to match the naked, intimate feel of the EP. It was also a leap forward in ZAPTRA's overall sound, so it seemed only right to make a leap forward visually. Early on, Art Paz from ZAPTRA was interested in bio-luminescence imagery, creatures that dwelt miles beneath the deepest ocean depths. There seemed to be a visual symmetry between deep ocean and deep space, so why not try to combine the two somehow? This time around I wanted to stick with a hand drawn feel, a marked departure from the last releases that were essentially more design based. We also talked of a "fetal" iconic figure, to represent this dawning of a new direction, with a third eye looking to the future. Other ideas stemmed from images of circulatory systems, nerve endings, veins, etc which eventually lead me to the pattern designs that wrapped around the final "alien" figure, which were loosely based off muscle and tissue structures.
Some early thumbnails trying to break through to the final image....
These two sketches, the main figure "alien" and the textural "veins" completed in June'13, served as the inspiration and foundation for the final artwork. I originally created the alien's "entrails" on multiple layers, but decided against it and simplified them as one unifying piece. The artwork would go through varying stages of development until Feb'14 when it was finally completed and sent to press.
Various stages of layout and color comps for the front cover...
These last two were close, but decided they were moving away from our original concept...

The "veins" also became very useful as the final artwork for the CD face...

Salt Studio Mural

I spent the month of FEB working on a new mural project for a halotherapy clinic in Pasadena called "Salt Studio". This one covered 3 walls, approx 150 square feet total and took me close to 60 hours to complete. I started off sketching out the "yeti" by using tape to map out the larger areas. Eventually the mural evolved from my initial sketch as I made adjustments according to the space. You can see the mural at the grand opening at the Salt Studio, this SAT, APRIL 6th; reception from 3-6pm. More info at: www.saltstudiopasadena.com
